This Halloween Phish kept their fans entertained and incredibly surprised as this years Halloween “musical costume” was based upon the 1979 sound effects record “Chilling, Thrilling Sounds of The Haunted House” by Disneyland records. The original record has sound effects on one side and the other has a narration that incorporates many sounds, however there is no musical component at all to the record. How does a band play a sound effects record? I really don’t know, but Phis did it and they did it in their own Phishy way. Phish put together a musical experience that will not soon be forgotten. Essentially what Trey & Co. did was to put jam based music to the narrative and used that story, dancers, and an elaborate stage set to create a musical of sorts. So for the past two years Phish has graced their fans with 100% original and new music. What a band!
The Halloween set consisted of 11 songs three to four of which I would not be surprised if we hear again. In fact on the following two performances Phish incorporated teases of these songs into their regularly rotating song selections. My three favorite (and I’m sure many would agree) were “Your Pet Cat”, “The Birds”, and “Martian Monster”. This art piece popped into my head immediately following the narration accompanying the song: The Birds – “Some people keep birds as pets in their homes. Not you. You fear the feathered creatures with their sharp beaks and clutching talons. The birds seem to sense your terror, for each time you step outside your house THEY ATTACK!”. The very next day I got busy creating this image. It was originally intended to be a two color screen print but right before I burned the screens another talented artist shared a very similar image. I decided to put my work on the back burner. For two solid weeks I’ve been listening to this song – I love it! The music accompanying the vocal sample “They Attack” is very bluesy and heart felt. With the impression this song and the Halloween performance has left on the Phish community, I’ve decided to revisit my image and alter it a bit.
The final art piece is not a print series but rather a single original piece. The artwork has been printed digitally and attached to a foam board, cut, and layered. The 3-dimensional piece is beautifully displayed in a matted shadowbox frame. While creating this, I was nervous that I’d make a mistake and had two copies of each image printed (2 teal background, 2 red background…). Luckily everything worked out great on my first attempt. The extra prints are available for purchase on our website as 1/1 prints.
